How would you like to have microchips that snuff their environment for spare energy? Energy scavenging does not seem to be possible at this very moment, but who knows? The embedded systems industry is doubling in size within months. Innovations in this area are abundant, thanks to the large reserve of scientists and engineers from India and China. The day of energy scavenging may soon be realized. Who knows?Link: 'Energy scavenging' the next big thing : News : Hardware - ZDNet Asia

Technochem Environmental Complex (TEC) in Singapore uses an Emerson Process Management Smart Wireless field network on its 14 tanks to automate inventory management and monitor tanks levels. Since the installation last April 2008, more accurate real-time data for efficient processing, access to the data through the company's network, data reliability and minimizing power consumption, are the seen benefits of the wireless system. A country torn by war is a country with slow economic growth and almost every country has local or international version of this. But this does not mean that the government will be down to its knees to give in to the demands of these extremist and rebellious groups. A Government such as Turkey will stop at nothing to be rid of these security and economic threats to its country by implementing new military equipments and devices such as smart sensors and bombs. To learn more about this, read the rest here. Link: [link]

The thing about sewage systems is that there is a tendency to have quite a number of parts of it untouched with rainwater that it is supposed to hold. Probably it's just faulty design. Probably it's just a problem with changing patterns. I do not know. But a way should be done to spread the spills to the untouched places. In this case, wireless sensors might be the answer.Link: Wireless Sensors Reduce Flooding in Indiana City - Government Technology

One out of every six aluminum can is made using BP Cherry Point's calcinide coke making the 225,000 bpd the largest supplier to the aluminum industry. In BP Cherry Point, Calciner Unit bearings and calciner coke temperatures are being monitored by Emerson Smart Wireless installation to prevent fan and conveyor failure and can prevent production losses. Commercial technology manager for BP, Mark Howard said that wireless technology is very important vehicle for getting instrumentation into places where wired devices wouldn't be practical. If there is one thing that hinders the wireless sensors industry from further moving, that would be battery life. Most of these wireless sensor systems consume a lot of energy, making it difficult and expensive to maintain.Time after time, we get new inventions saying that their wireless sensor networks consume as little energy as possible. Let's check if GreenPeak, a Netherlands-based startup, is worth the time. Link: GreenPeak: Battery-Free Sensor Networks Ramping Up in the U.S. « Earth2Tech
